Days Out To Suit The Young And The Old

If you’re planning a day out for multiple generations, it can seem tricky to cater to every person’s taste. Happily, though, there are ways to keep both the little people and the older family members involved. Read on for a bunch of different destinations and locations, and what to do at each for a smile on everyone’s face!

The park

For the young…

The park is a great place for kids. There is loads of space to run around freely, and you don’t have to warn them about knocking things off surfaces! Parks also usually have play equipment in, which will keep them happy and quiet for some time. The great thing about kids is their ability to entertain themselves; you just have to give them the tools to do so. Take a football along, as there many be goalposts in situ, or a basketball if there is a court. Alternatively, if the park has a sand pit, dig out your old bucket and spade sets. While there might be sand to play with, there will likely not be equipment too.

For the old…

Taking the elderly along to the park is viable. Take a couple of fold-up chairs with you so they can sit comfortably. Park benches are usually rather hard and unforgiving! They might enjoy the fresh air, too. Have them wrap up warm and pick up one of their favourite magazines on the way.

The pool

For the young…

The trick to this one is finding a place with lots of activities and amenities. The kids can be kept happy by swimming alone. Teach them underwater tricks, like how to do a handstand or a forward roll. Even better is if you can find a place with slides, or a fully fledged water park. The other great thing about swimming baths is the fact that they have lifeguards. While it doesn’t mean you can keep the children unattended, it does mean someone else is looking out for them too.

For the old…

Saunas and steam room are idyllic places! Here, your older family members can relax in a warm environment. Just don’t let them stay inside too long; we don’t want anybody fainting!

The seaside

For the young…

There is so much to do at the seaside; it really is impossible not to please everyone. For kids, find the theme park! It will have stalls, games, kiosks and of course, the rides. Check height requirements before you travel to avoid disappointments. The likelihood is, the venue will have rides and amusements especially for young children. Remember that everything is relative. What looks like a boring roller coaster to you might look 10 feet tall and super exciting to a five-year-old! Don’t forget about the beach too. That alone can keep kids occupied for a day!

For the old…

The fresh, sea air is great for everyone, no matter what our age. If a town or city has a seaside, chances are it has lots of other activities too. On trips to blackpool seaside, for example, they can enjoy a professional show at the Pleasure Beach while the kids are on the rides. Then you can all share fish and chips along the pier; because that’s a meal loved by every age!

The cinema

For the young…

The trick here is going to the cinema when there are showings for both ages groups on. Some cinemas also do super cheap screenings exclusively for little ones. Going to these also means you won’t have to disturb people enjoying a movie without kids!

For the old…

Cinemas aren’t filled with those uncomfortable, fold-up seats anymore. Some now offer far more cosy alternatives. These include sofas strewn with cushions. Some cinemas even have leather armchairs. These types of venues tend to have pull-out tables too. Plus, at certain ones you can get at-seat service before the showing begins. Tea or coffee, grandma?

The theatre

For the young…

The theatre is great for kids, and it lets them be entertained away from the TV screen! Or their mobile phone, for that matter! The best shows for kids are sometimes ones with interactivity. This might include audience participation, and encouraging children to shout out answers to questions. Pantomime is a great example of interactive theatre.

For the old…

Theatre is an idyllic place for the elderly. They get to be entertained, have a sit-down and there is a break for drinks in the middle! If you want theatre suitable for both the young and old, consider a production with a mixture of ages in the cast. Local repertory theatre is great for this. They often have adults to carry the main parts and bulk of the action. These grown-up actors will be accompanied by child actors also.

The aquarium

For the young…

You’re killing two birds with one stone with a visit to the aquarium (or should we say fish?) Not only is it fun to see all the brightly coloured fish and different species, but it’s also educational. Whether they happen in person or electronically, tours will give information about what is on display. Some places do talks and tours especially for kids.

For the old…

The great thing about aquariums is the ability to take in your surroundings in your own time. There is no time limit and you don’t need to rush. You can stay and stare at one fish for an hour if you fancy! There is likely a nice cafe for a rest stop during the trip. They might even pick up a new pet fish from the pet shop on the way out…

Whichever day trip you decide to take, think carefully before you set off about your packing. Do you have warm layers for everyone in case the weather changes? Don’t forget that young and old skin are especially sensitive to sun damage, so keep sun lotion handy.
