Working out what career path to choose can be confusing and frustrating. With so much choice out there, no-one can make a quick decision. Or an easy one, for that matter. You have to be 100% certain that you are following the right path. Otherwise, you will hate your job and possibly need to retrain for a new career.
Are you unsure which career is right for you? If so, these five simple steps will help you narrow down your choices:
- Make a list of what gets you excited and energised
You should think about what it is that motivates you the most. For instance, if you enjoy helping others, a care job might be appropriate.
- Think of how you could cope with stress
It’s no secret that some jobs are more stressful than others. Especially if a lot of change takes place in the workplace, as the infographic below depicts:

- Take a test to find out where you could use your skills
Let’s say that you have excellent IT skills. You could get a job in all kinds of sectors from technical support to database analysis.
- Become an intern
If you’ve just finished school, why not work as an intern? Doing so will give you a real insight into the job you think you might love. If you’re happy with the work, and your boss is happy with you, they might hire you!
- Do some volunteering work
If you want to work with a charity, you could do some volunteering work. Again, you’ll learn more about what it’s like to work in a particular niche within the charity sector.
