Why does recruitment have to be boring? When companies realise they need new employees, most of them go about it in a really samey fashion. They write out a flavorless job description and get an agency to spam it out to job search websites. Where’s the thrill in that?

You don’t just want people to work for you. You want people to want to work for you. And yes, there is a difference! You need to put effort into making your company seem like the best place to work in the world. You also want your recruitment campaign to reach as many eyes as possible. And remember: a really great recruitment campaign can bring attention to itself by going viral.

But if people are looking for jobs, then won’t they be on job search websites? Why bother trying to spice things up too much? The important thing to remember here is that you’re not only targeting people who are looking for work. In fact, many of the best people for the position you’re advertising may already have work. You’ve got to grab their attention, too.

Here are a few ideas to get those applicants eager to work for you. You’re going to need a high-end application tracking system with all the applications you’re going to get!

Your website

Your website is where people will go to get a grasp of who you are. What the personality of your company is. The keyword there is personality. Your website should already have a modern, intuitive design for marketing purposes. But you should also consider having an “About Us” page that features photos of your workplace and employees.

Use social media

Aside from marketing, this is one of the reasons why you should always be trying to get a strong online following. When you have loads of people following your Twitter and Facebook accounts, you can advertise the position to them all affordably. If the ad is something funny, then people may share it even if they’re not interested in the position!

Don’t be boring in the job description

I referred to flavorless job descriptions earlier. I remember all the times I was going through job search websites and was dismayed by everything I found. The job descriptions were filled with uninspiring text. It was all so clichéd and made the job sound repetitive and boring. If the job should be enjoyable, then so should the job description. Work with a copywriter to ensure an exciting description!

Give them a reason to look closer

One of the biggest tricks of the trade is to grab people’s attention with something big. But when you’re hiring, you can’t just use a headline or an image to get all the information you need across. So this big “attention-grabber” has to pull you in closer. McDonald’s once did this to controversial but undeniably thought-provoking effect.

A YouTube video

People often underestimate the power of a video ad when it comes to recruitment. Try to remember just how much content and character you can put into a video, even one as short as fifteen seconds. You can either use it as video content on your website or you can look into getting it placed as an ad before other videos.
