Time is money for any business. It doesn’t matter whether you are in the architectural, engineering or construction space, it’s all the same. So, when you get sucked down a productivity sinkhole, it’s going to cost you in more ways than one. There are plenty of things that can slow down your business processes, and today, we’re going to take a look at five of the most common. So, if you think you can get more from your day, read on and we’ll show you what you need to consider.
The bad meeting
Meetings are useful – there’s no doubt about it. They can get everyone on the same page, and they are also a good time to discuss new ideas and improvements for your business. However, there are good meetings and bad. To avoid the latter, it’s vital that you keep things as short and sweet as possible. Set a strict agenda from the outset, and only discuss those topics. Be strong in the chair – without being rude or dismissive, of course. Virtual meetings can also be effective time-savers. There’s little point in pulling people away from their remote jobs just to sit around a table when you can video link with them.
Too many emails
How often do you check your emails every day? Most of those messages aren’t worth the time, and it can lead to a lot of waste and distraction. Take a look at your emails first thing in the morning and the last thing at night, instead. You can also have a peek at lunchtime if you must – but no more than that. Make sure that you turn off your notifications, too.
Saying yes to the wrong job
While it’s tempting to say yes to any request for work, it can lead to productivity issues. For example, let’s say that a client gets in touch and asks you to do something for them that is outside of your terms and conditions. Now, your customer service head will tell you to do it – but how much time will it take? If you accept, you will need to finish that job, which could take you away from better money-making opportunities. Always consider the tasks you take on with time at the forefront of your mind.
With so many productivity tools out there, it’s surprising that so many people still do everything in old fashioned ways. Sure, there is a methodology at work, but think about the time you could save. There are hundreds of data processing, for example, which can save businesses an enormous amount of hours every week. Take a look at this free Revit plugin trial for a good illustration of the type of things you can expect. Technology is there to make our lives easier, so make sure you embrace it, and you will save a lot of time.
Procrastination is the biggest time killer in business. There’s always an element of waiting for the right time, but the truth is, there is no better time than the present. Perfectionism is not something that will win you business – it will only hold you back. So, stop worrying about the smallest little details, start finishing things, and win back some of your valuable time.
