What Has Been Updated and Added in PrestaShop’s New Release?

Updates to widely used platforms are always a source of interest, and the latest version of PrestaShop is no exception. If you are not familiar with it, PrestaShop is a very popular open source platform for creating and managing e-commerce, and the newest update is version 1.6.1.0. If you are already a PrestaShop user, or are looking for a good online retail platform you can use for a new business venture, then here is what you need to know about the update:

What Has Been Updated and Added in PrestaShop's New Release?

Aesthetic Changes

One of the first things that jumps out in terms of differences is that PrestaShop have added a mascot! OK, this has nothing much to do with the features of the site, but Preston, the cute new PrestaShop puffin, does make a nice addition to the branding and perhaps makes using the software a little more fun.

When it comes to more practical aesthetic changes, users of older versions of PrestaShop will find that the back office area has been given a complete makeover. Navigation feels easier, and the interface has been refreshed, making for a better user experience at the back end where the business happens.

Optimization

PrestaShop have implemented stricter coding standards for this release, which on any open source platform is always good news – it means better quality, and a product that has been more effectively tested before it is put in the hands of the users. As well as polishing up their code, the developers have also optimized how the system handles SQL queries, as well as some other technical aspects, meaning interacting with the databases is faster and more efficient, both for the back end user and their customers making transactions through the site.

New Functionality

As well as design changes and a bit of general optimization, what really makes an update worth talking about is new added features and functionality. Release 1.6.1.0 of PrestaShop actually adds an entire new module to the back end of the platform, which enables you to monitor and manage compliance with EU regulations, and also some new features relating to pricing currencies and tax. Because the legal and tax side of selling online can be baffling for many online store owners, anything like this that makes it easier to deal with is a welcome bonus, and the EU module will certainly make it easier for people with stores based on PrestaShop to begin selling into new markets within the European Union.

As you can see, PrestaShop have packed quite a lot into this version, and with it being an open source project, you can be sure they are already building on these changes ahead of another great release in the future. Upgrading to the latest version of PrestaShop is nice and easy, or, if you are not currently a user you can simply install version 1.6.1.0 and get started using it straight away! Hopefully you will find that with these changes, managing your online store is easier and more comfortable than ever!
