In this day and age, everything’s getting “smarter.” Our phones are smart, and so are our TV’s, our appliances and even our cars. And with all the advancements in modern technology, it’s no wonder that our homes are starting to catch up. Even here in Texas, where we may prefer the old-fashioned way of life, smart house technology is becoming increasingly popular, and with good reason! Keep reading for tips on how to make your home “smarter,” not to mention safer, more enjoyable and more livable.

What is a Smart Home?

In a nutshell, smart home technology is designed so that certain appliances, such as thermostats, garage doors, stoves, etc., can be controlled remotely via the use of a smartphone, tablet or computer. For example, with smart home technology, homeowners can use a smartphone app to control the lighting, temperature, multimedia devices and even security in their homes. This is accomplished through the use of an automation system, which syncs up a home’s appliances and devices, allowing them to be controlled from anywhere. And the good news about smart home technology is that most of it is easily installed, and doesn’t require the purchase of new appliances. In fact, most systems can be installed by the homeowners, themselves, without running new wiring.

Making Your Home Smarter

In addition to automation systems, there are plenty of ways homeowners can make their homes smarter and safer. Gadgets and devices like the following are great examples of how homeowners all across the United States are increasing the IQ’s of their homes:

  • Keyless door locks. The newest in door locks is that they can now be controlled remotely, via wireless networks. What’s more, many keyless systems can be programmed to let in cleaning services, visitors, etc. at pre-approved times, and can also text alerts to your phone.
  • Security. We all know the importance of home security: without it, our homes and families are vulnerable to a variety of crimes and other scary situations. In fact, in Houston alone, nearly 28,000 homes are burglarized each and every year. And while that statistic is frightening, you can protect your home with a top-of-the-line system. ADT security systems, for example, offer features like digital keypads, motion sensor alarms, wireless sensors for windows and doors, fire and burglar alarms, and much more.
  • Video monitoring. If you’ve ever wondered what goes on in your home when you’re not there, a video monitoring device could be just the thing you need. These devices are great for security purposes, and can provide a significant amount of peace of mind when you’re away.
  • Smart kitchen appliances. Pretty soon, our appliances will be doing all the work for us. Until that day comes, enjoy smart appliances like refrigerators equipped with internet radio and recipe apps, slow cookers than be controlled remotely, and a variety of other smart kitchen gadgets and devices.

While modern-day Americans may not be living like the Jetsons just yet, technology is constantly advancing and changing the world we live in. And with smart home features like the one’s listed here, you can be sure that you, your family and your home are keeping up with the latest advancements.
