Offices tend to accumulate a lot of things. Equipment, documents, people, and so on. A lot of the time, it’ll get to a point here an office actually has quite a lot of junk. Does that sound like the office of your business? Then it’s time for a clearout.

Furniture

Not every office has a wide variety of furniture. And, admittedly, it’s unlikely you have a ton of sofas you don’t use even if you do have a wide variety of furniture. If there’s one thing I’ve often noticed a surplus of in offices, though, it’s chairs. Yeah, I know: they can come in handy at some point, right? Maybe if we get more employees one day? Well, I’d recommend that you actually inspect the chairs that aren’t being used. Quite often they’re not in great condition. Maybe the backs don’t move. Perhaps they move too much. Maybe there’s a wheel missing. Maybe they’re just really uncomfortable chairs! If you’ve got low-quality chairs lying around, get rid of them.

Papers

I’ve not been to an office where there’s a bunch of documents that have been lying around untouched for ages. You become convinced that every little piece of paper is going to be of some importance some day. Eventually, all these documents just pile up. They cover your desk. They flood your drawers. I’m sure there are a bunch of these documents you could get rid of. You could, at the very least, look into off-site records management. This provides you with more room without getting rid of the documents outright.

Check the fridge

Seriously. Office kitchens are where a lot of the dangers of your everyday office take place. Usually, we associate this danger with spills and sharp objects. But what about the nasties that could be lurking in the fridge? People tend to leave their lunches, snacks, and drinks in the office fridge and then forget about them. Not only do they end up taking up too much room, but they eventually expire and turn gross! Not exactly hygienic. Introduce a new policy: every Friday, the fridge gets cleared out. Unless an employee specifies they need something in there, throw out anything that remains by the end of the week.

Technology

Maybe you thought than 70-inch ultra hi-def television would actually come in handy one day. Perhaps you bought into the hype that virtual reality or 3D printers could help every business. Or maybe you simply haven’t gotten rid of the various printers, monitors, keyboards, and the like that have been outworn. Whatever the case, you have a bunch of electronics you simply don’t use. It’s time to get rid of that stuff, my friend. Sell some of that equipment on to earn some cash. If it isn’t worth a lot or simply doesn’t work, get it recycled.

People who aren’t doing their job

I’ve never worked at an office where there wasn’t someone who simply didn’t do their job. Employers simply don’t always notice. If there’s someone there who isn’t doing what you pay them to do? Fire them. Well, have a stern word first. Then fire them if it continues.
