Are Your Bad Habits Holding You Back
You know how difficult it is to run a business. Plenty to take of, books to go over, and then there’s also our pesky life just sitting there, waiting to take our eye off the ball at the most crucial moments. Yet that’s not all – while we can usually very easily find the external problems that compromise our success, we tend to not have the same scrutiny on ourselves. Put simply: are your bad habits negatively affecting how successful you are?

How You Work
There’s a romantic idea of a genius at work, stacks and stacks of book around him or her, the external world an irrelevance to their brilliant mind. That works in films, not so much in real life. To be productive, you have be in the environment that allows you to work. As a starting point, that means keeping the areas in which you work clear from things that aren’t directly linked to whatever it is you’re trying to achieve. It also means having the right posture – slouching really does stop you from working well!
Trying too Hard
Whoever thought that trying too hard would be counterproductive? But alas, it is! Jumping out of bed in the morning and instantly getting to work is not the way to work. You need to shower, have breakfast, give yourself room to do nothing and let your mind wander. Also, as businessman Steve Voudouris says, multitasking is probably doing you more harm than good. Keep things focused on one task and you’ll be doing yourself a favour.
Keeping the Routine
You probably know by now that it’s important to maintain a routine. This ensures that you make the most of you. For example, rising at 6, hitting the gym, getting to work for 8 every morning would be a solid routine. You’ll grow into it, and be raring to go when you reach the office. Also, though, you need to know when to stop as well as start. Even if you’re on fire, staying much later than planned can do you more harm than good – it messes up the routine, and you’ll pay for it in tiredness eventually.
Being On Top of Everything
It’s a noble quest to want everything to be as good as possible, but it’s just not feasible. Instead, pick the areas you definitely want to be as good as possible and then let the others get by with standards that are not so high. Small details won’t make or break your business unless you spend too much time on them.
Knowing when to Quit
‘Never be a quitter’ is generally good advice, but the best businesspeople know when to call it a day. You’ll be more of a failure if you beat a bad idea into the ground instead of pulling the plug earlier. Everyone misses from time to time – and some of the most high profile businesspeople have plenty of failures under their belt. In the long run, it’s about putting your energies into the right ideas!
